Joanna Star Anonychuk began her performance career in Winnipeg at a very young age working as both a professional actress in purely dramatic roles on stage and television, as well as a singer in musical theatre, Gilbert and Sullivan, and opera. Studying with both Sara Udow and Dorothy Lawson in Winnipeg, she focused on becoming a classical lyric-coloratura soprano in her Associate Diploma (ARCT) in voice performance with the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. She also has her MA in Anthropology, focusing on Ethnomusicology, from the University of Manitoba where she was a Full Fellowship Award recipient. She held vocal scholarships at many major Canadian Arts Centres including: the Banff School of Fine Arts (where she studied with Martin Isepp, Herta Glaz, Harold Brown and David Astor), the Shawnigan Summer School of the Arts, the Vancouver Academy of Music (with Phyllis Mailing), and The Vancouver Community Music School (with Dr. Jacob Hamm and Luigi Wood).

As a classical soprano, she has performed widely across British Columbia's Lower Mainland, and both Western and Northern Canada with the Trio Anjoleo (with Angela Cavadas and Leo Aquino) under the auspices of George Zuckerman’s “Overture Concert Productions”.

She has performed with the Vancouver Opera Association, as a guest soloist with the Vancouver New Music Society, CBC Nationally, Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra, Okanagan Summer Festival for Composers, and repeatedly across BC with the Vancouver Academy Cello Ensemble under the direction of Ian Hampton of the Purcell String Quartet.

Joanna has also performed duet concerts with guitarist/lutanists Stephen Boswell and Alan Rinehart and has done numerous solo concerts spanning her entire career. She has sung on both Radio and Television, and performed numerous original compositions by composers such as Francis Chan, Jean Piche, David Jaggs as well as recorded their compositions. Joanna also worked as the administrator with Prism Dance Theatre and the Vancouver New Music Society.

As a young performer, Joanna entered and won a number of musical, artistic, and dramatic competitions in both Manitoba and BC in various divisions. She was part of the theatre company “Plays for Living” Actors Ensemble for over 7 years that performed social drama throughout Manitoba and Winnipeg. Her first paid musical theatre performance was with Rainbow Stage in Winnipeg when she was 16. She continues to personally perform solo concerts in a variety of settings and adjudicates performing arts competitions.

Joanna has taught both voice and drama extensively in many arts and cultural centres, colleges, and musical institutes, as well as privately in Manitoba and throughout the Lower Mainland. She has coached entire productions, including all leads in the productions. Joanna currently teaches full-time in her studio in Surrey. She performs in many recitals alongside her talented students and teaches a variety of musical styles: Jazz, Musical Theatre, Popular, and Classical Opera. She teaches in any language brought to her and with great success. She never turns down the opportunity to coach and teach an unusual project.

Joanna’s students continually distinguish themselves in leading roles across Canada in major Opera houses and with Symphonies such as the Vancouver Symphony and Victoria Symphony. Additionally in many leading performance venues doing solo and ensemble concerts and theatre companies in Metro Vancouver in professional Musical Theatre productions. She also teaches in the public school system, colleges, numerous dance theatres, community musical theatre productions, and with the Opera Program at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Some of her students are thriving with online careers doing a myriad number of styles and in original compositions and musical theatre productions, etc.

Joanna has a special knack of helping young composers with vocal lines so that they are not only more beautiful, but also far more singable. She welcomes this type of work and the more creative the project, the more engaged, excited and interested she becomes!
